I'm looking for a cheap laptop. My key criteria is performance and speed at doing the basics. Need it for Internet and basic administration.
Is a chrome book a good place to start? I basically need the function and speed of a high end smart phone in a laptop. A sturdy design would also be a plus.

I had a Chromebook as my main computer for three years and I loved it. It was stable, started up in seconds and never gave me any trouble. Excellent battery life too. I haven't looked at what's available these days but a few years back cheap ones were £150 and descent ones were £300. The only real differences were the screen and trackpad quality. If you are going to be on it for a bit of time make sure the screen is good enough. There are some flip versions too if tablet functionality is any use to you.
