No gameplay footage (though, at this point, I think we all know what to expect from an Animal Crossing game), just a suitably-sinister Tom Nook making an offer you (well, I) can't refuse.

I'm just hoping that 1. it doesn't copy any of Pocket Camp's microtransaction economy, even if it doesn't have actual microtransactions, and 2. you don't need the Online Pass to visit other people's villages.

That second one seems unlikely, though - while they might let you send letters and items to other towns without the Pass, I can see the train station being subscriber-only.

I enjoyed the bait and switch with Isabelle and Smash in the Direct. After six or so iterations though I’m fairly confident in saying Animal Crossing really isn’t my thing.

I really tried to get into the 3DS game. I love the idea of it, playing a few minutes a day. There just didn't seem to be enough stuff to do.

Coming online and pulling weeds felt, unsurprisingly, like a chore. Stardew Valley made stuff like that fun, but Animal Crossing did nothing for me. Am I dead inside?

Animal Crossing is not what you'd call goal-oriented; its laid-back pacing isn't just a misleading facade over a grinding slot machine, it really is just slow and peaceful and… nice.

None of its systems are mandatory. There's as much busywork as you're willing to undertake, but the game isn't going to make you do it, or even really reward you if you do.

Some people click with it, some don't; you need to enjoy doing the stuff it presents you with for its own sake, for your own satisfaction.

I'm mostly excited on behalf of Minx, who hasn't really got stuck into a console game since the 360, due to philosophical disagreements with Sony's analogue stick placement.
