And Gamesmaster, which to be honest I thought had shut down years ago.

Worth a mention, seeing as the Society was quite closely linked with GamesTM in the beginning. I seem to remember the forum started as a 'secret' bit of the original TGN, before moving onto its own site.

I bought the very first issue of GamesTM (it had a bloody awful Sam Fisher cover, I seem to recall… they never were as good as Edge at covers), and kept my sub going for years.

Is Edge still worth a read?

Edge was always a bit dry for my tastes, taking everything (including itself) so seriously. One of the things I really didn't like was its editorial tone, where everything was written as though by a single amorphous organism, and nothing had any byline or personality you could catch on to, nobody you could recognise as on your own wavelength. It seemed to be aiming for authoritative, but just came across (to me) as slightly pretentious.

…just realised this isn't a thread about Edge.

GamesMaster was anarchic and weird, and, if anything, a bit too keen for a laugh. GamesTM seemed to strike a good balance, as I recall, even if the publishing schedule was occasionally erratic.

Saddened by this as still subscribe and still post on the forum and most of my XL friends list is made up of the forumites. Missing a few earlier issues but easily have at least 195-200 of the issues of this.

I remember reading the comments from the soc in there and finding the old page and you all being a clique little lot who didn't like me… One day I hope to change that.

Where is Zombies anyway?

It's got very very page thin lately although not sure if it's being dyslexic or what but I personally like being able to read something A4 side and that has a structure my brain has learned to process etc.

I hadn't noticed that Gamesmaster is also ending which was announced the same day and in the first post. I had planned to cancel my subscription to Retrogamer as I got it as part of a discount and whilst I like the mag due to the nature of retro games there are some issues I barely read as not into the home computing side of stuff so have little interest when they are spectrum/c64 heavy or features are on games I am not fussed about, but going to keep my sub for the time being as otherwise I will be magazine-less.

I remember the issue where I wrote three of the letters on the letters page because they were short of contributors.

Happy days.

And Zombies fucked off because he hated us all, so I think you'll find there's little love to be found here.

Appreciate the mag wouldn't have anything to do with this, but the publisher just auto rolled my subscription over onto Edge. Cancelled that already as previously read Edge and wasn't really a fan of the style.

So the forum shutdown yesterday. Had been posting on there since 06 I believe, maybe slightly earlier. Had just clocked 3000 posts which isn't prolific but I can't imagine any forum I've spent more time on.

Highlights include twice finishing bottom of the Street Fighter league, once without ever even winning a single bout of the matches. And being involved in the fairly prolific Battlefield squads that used to get set up. Struggling to even pick out the actual BF but it was one of the modern combat ones.

I've reached that stage where I think the vast majority of my XL friends list have moved on. Many were from Counter Strike or Halo 2 on the original Xbox, most others were from GamesTM forum. Feeling very old right now and a tiny bit lonely.
