This snuck out on the Switch last night.

Free download and it's basically Battle Royale Tetris. You play against 99 other players. When you clear rows they get sent to one of the other players and fills up their stack (you have a certain amount of control over who they go to). Last player left standing wins.

It's surprisingly brilliant.

I've downloaded this but haven't had a chance to try it yet. I can be good at Tetris, but it seems highly dependent on which version; I was reliably competent with the DS edition, but the GameBoy was beyond me.

I have a feeling the pressure of 98 other players might be too much in this, though.

You might be OK: it's definitely the newer iteration of Tetris, with the ability to hold one piece in your hand and use T-spins (which remain reliably beyond me).

It's fascinating how different this feels to Tetris Effect, despite being exactly the same game at its core.

I think this is good and extremely addictive and I still can't believe it exists, when I heard we were getting a Tetris Battle Royale I was in disbelief, but it's amazing. What next, FPS Tetris? Tetris RPG? At this point I think I'd give them the benefit of the doubt on either one. D:

God, this is a bit moreish, eh?

Haven't made it into the top ten yet - best was 14th, but mostly I've been hanging around the 20 mark, once I get into the flow of it a little.

I feel like there's probably a strategy to which targets you select for sending your lines to, but I'm mostly just going for KOs.

No, there's a PSP version as well.

Apparently that was a joke on the part of the official Twitter account. Disappointing.

Switch only I think.

My best so far is #23. My tactic is to stay as low on the board as possible without worrying about attacking, and that seems to help me last longer presumably because I’m not then a target for everyone selecting KO. But I’m still fairly hopeless.

The matchmaking seems very quick - it'll be interesting to see how that holds up. There seems to be little to no region limiting in it (I've played against a bunch of people with Japanese names) but the cynical part of me does wonder if there's maybe a few bots in the mix as well.

It's basically unheard of to reliably get 99 people in a lobby in under a minute with, as near as I've seen, zero connection errors - especially in a game that's been released for free with zero lead in.

Not that Tetris is really going to be a network hog, of course.

I guess the fact that games take no more than a couple of minutes helps with that a lot. But it’s an interesting point about bots. I wonder.

And, as noted, it's very much a "one more…" kind of game. I've not yet left after a single match, no matter how soundly I've been thrashed. Once you're in the lobby, you're there for five or six rounds at least.

I don't really get it. What's hold? How do I stop other people filling my wotsit with stuff?

The last time I played Tetris was 1990.

Hold lets you store a single piece in your hand for later use. So if you get one of the long straight pieces and want to save it, you can tap the shoulder button and it’ll store it away and replace it with another piece. When you want to bring it back out then tap Hold again and it’ll swap it with your current piece.

How do I stop other people filling my wotsit with stuff?

My parents warned me about hanging around in those establishments, you'd do well to heed their advice.

I am kinda turning on it at the moment. I am finding it too stressful and different from how you'd usually play Tetris. The randomness of how attacks can just stack against you and the futility of the situations they put you in that never allows you to recover. Seems a bit counter intuitive.

It's not random though. Just as in an FPS, if someone's got you in their sights and has a bigger gun (read: better Tetris skills), you're probably dead. :)

And it sucks then, too.

At least in an FPS, most core single-player skills (aim and reaction speed) are transferable to multiplayer. Tetris 99 requires entire additional strategies that're extremely fragile when put against other people's actions – which are performed, essentially, in a vacuum.

Do I store up lines to send, or keep my board as clean as I can to reduce the risk of catastrophic failure when I receive someone else's lines? What group (or individual) should I target? These are not questions that most solo Tetris players have ever had to consider, and they're on top of the existing moment-to-moment strategic decisions that you've got to make already.

Also, it is random, insofar as nothing I do can necessarily affect who is targeting me at any given point.

Yeah but the way I get in there sites appears too random. Had a couple rounds where 60 seconds in I get hit with multiple blocks. I get that when you are high the ko factor kicks in, but initally what is causing that? As someone who would regularly blast past 110plus lines on the GB which few others I knew could do, I don't feel like this is a case of me performing poorly.

I've seen people posting consistently high on the internet though, it can't be that lucky, not that I know shit about high level Tetris.

Yeah that's a fair point. I think for me I'd rather just play Tetris, I didn't like Puyo Puyo because it wasn't just straight tetris.
