So I almost never start threads so thought what the hell, I started Total War:Warhammer Friday then. Not played a total war game in maybe 10 years and whilst it doesn't seem to have the same charm with me it used it, I was enjoying its mix of kinda like a boardgame, kinda like Hereos of Might & Magic, and much more like a sort of Civ lite. Think the last I played was the original Medieval War 2, and loved the Rome one.

I got to turn 30 before a complete collapse due to not understanding anything, and then reloaded a previous save from about turn 12 and started to right some of that, previously I would always have just started again but don't feel I have time for that.

Any into these or played them?

Posted in the last two Play/Want/Bin threads I've got Shogun 2 and Medieval 2 and had been playing Shogun 2, Medieval is 1000% more my thing but apparently Shogun is the best as a game so I tried it first…

I've beaten the first Shogun Total War back in the day and it was just a fun game, this on Normal difficulty got a bit too hard and too much for me, if you don't set up the economy right, if you don't build the best buildings and if you wait too long you will be in for a bit of a rough time, broke and overstretched. Or at least I was. I took a very long time to take Kyushu from Chosokabe as Shimazu simply because by then being that far spread meant I ran into a lot of revolts (I had destroyed the Christian influences and was still getting it -_-) and a lot of BS with the Naval stuff (Naval battles are kinda' shit).

I conceded after finally taking Kyushu and literally everyone declaring War on me for being too powerful, which meant boats up my ass and people coming for me for days, it really did feel pretty anti chill. Also fuck Sieges, I've seen the massive Siege battles in RTW 2 and they look visually spectacular but micromanaging that many units does not look fun now I've played Shogun.

I wanna play Medieval because Knights are cooler anyway but I'm a little put off now, am curious how different it is since it's not placed in one region as Shogun is (being localised completely within Japan). Also I can declare War on France, Etoile forgive me.

Yeah with you on the Knights, I think that was a bit part of the appeal, the whole castle sieges and armoured divisions in that just felt so right if you are into that.

Romans are kinda cool but that game also looks even more total War than I can handle than Shogun is.

I've always been a fan of this series but it's been a while since I sank any time into it.

Like everyone else here, the sweet spot for me was around the time of Rome / Medieval 2 (which is, to be fair, going back 15+ years at this point). After that they seemed to up the complexity significantly, with a lot more emphasis on the strategic map and managing the economy, and they became a bit exhausting. Empire was particularly huge (you had to manage three completely separate parts of the world simultaneously) and Rome 2 was an absolute behemoth as well. They've tried to intersperse that with smaller games like Napoleon and Atilla but even those feel like enormous undertakings.

I've got the first Warhammer Total War but I've never played it, I think the historical side of these things holds most of the appeal for me. I really should just pick one and sink some proper time into it. There's no shame in playing on Easy, I find they're often quite a stiff challenge even on that level when you're still trying to get to grips with all the systems.

Basically this is one of those series where you can't quite believe it's still going as strong as it is - every single one of these is a thousand-hour monster yet they churn them out annually plus shitloads of DLC and they all continue to sell. You'd think they'd be quite niche games really, or at least people would tire of them eventually, but it's a massive franchise and probably will be for a long time to come.

Yeah, more spinoffs would be cool, I know of Warhammer of course but I wouldn't know what most of the stuff was….I presume Orkz and Tyranids are in it?

Not total war but Company of Hereos 3 was announced this week, which I feel fits this thread.

Empire Total War was the last one I had played actually and was like 15 hours in and still doing the tutorials. I might reinstall that over the summer if I have it on Steam (as would have been a physical copy I had!) as do remember liking the battles.

Presume all my original PC physical copies of the games I had are in the loft somewhere.

So a new one of these is out today, anyone grab that? I didn't get very far in Total War Warhammer in the end but was vaguely enjoying it despite it feeling like a lot of work not knowing how to build the bases etc, this one does look good though.

I only just got round to installing Dawn of War 3 yesterday though, completely by random as decided I needed to try and break away from Football Manager, and had gotten dow3 in a sale ages ago.

I’d absolutely be playing it but none of the Total War games are on GeForce Now which is realistically the only way I’d be playing them in this day and age.

I got it. I've been looking forward to it for ages, and went back to TWW2 (or is it WTW2?) recently in anticipation. So far I've just played a small part of the prologue, up to the first battle, in which you play a recreation of the January 6th attack on the Capitol Building, chasing off a bunch of badly-dressed mutants and fanatics lead by a guy in a ridiculous animal hide headdress.

Skip to 11:30 in this video. Please ignore the man in the bottom corner - he is not me, it's just that his video was the only one I found with decent resolution.

You'll see the Qanon shaman menacing a camp (AKA the Capitol Building) and if you watch on to the battle itself you'll see a surprisingly realistic rendition of the Trump supporters who took part in the insurrection. For gameplay reasons, they are portrayed as being more organised and intelligent than their real-life versions, and less likely to whine about being pepper-sprayed. Visually they're spot-on though.

Another thing that you may notice from this battle is that the Kislev soldiers you control for some reason have the warcry, "Follow the Bear!" which, if you're an old git like me who remembers the old Hofmeister adverts, you might find as amusing as I did.
