Only rumour at this point but the noise around this seems to be increasing so it feels like something is on the way.

I wonder how this could work. I can absolutely see the market for a smaller, more portable Switch; I find the current model pretty bulky and it gets heavy after a while, and the thing could really do with Bluetooth headphone support.

A more powerful Switch, though? I guess you could stick a 1080p screen and a bigger battery in the thing, basically make it run in "docked" mode at all times - though that wouldn't make any difference at all for folk who typically use it in docked mode most of the time anyway. Any other kind of additional feature set though immediately raises concerns about backward compatibility and whether existing games would need to be updated to take advantage. Plus what kind of form factor and battery life would it have? Would existing accessories like docks, joy-cons and Labo work?

I don't know really. I could see the logic behind two models, a "home console" version and a "portable" version but then that torpedoes the entire selling point of the device. And you could keep the existing hybrid model I guess but then I don't think the market could support three separate versions of the Switch on sale at the same time.

Who knows. This is Nintendo, it'll probably come with a snorkel and flippers for all we know.

(One thing's for sure, though, the second iterations of Nintendo portable devices are always massive improvements. The GBA SP, DS Lite and New 3DS are all the definitive versions of their respective models. So this is one to watch, for sure).

I've been struggling to come up with features that would pique my interest in a new Switch, and this is literally all I can think of. It's not even a deal-breaker, since I mostly use the machine docked anyway. Maybe a slightly larger storage capacity?

This is the other reason (besides the already ridiculous backlog I have anyway) I haven't bought one yet - as soon as there were rumours of a second model I was inclined to wait for that (and the catalogue to fill out a bit more) before I take the plunge.

There's a new iPhone coming.

And a new one after that.

And a new one after that.

I get the idea but, really, you wait on the future and you end up there missing the past.

I get what you're going for there, but that's hardly a perfect analogy. Not only that, but if you were really were interested in getting an iPhone, and there was a new and improved model coming out out in a couple of months, wouldn't you wait for that? I held fire/wasn't that interested in the 3DS until there were plenty of games that I really wanted to play on it, and then the new 3DS (and Monster Hunter 4) sealed the deal, and that's worked out pretty well so far.

None of the Switch games that are already out are going anywhere, to my knowledge, so why not wait for the better version of the Switch experience before taking the plunge?

With the 3ds now in its end life, and with its replacement now being already here in the Switch. I can certainly see them looking at a Switch model that is meant to replace the lower end of that market. No one is giving their young children a 300quid device the way you would those slab 2ds.

So they surely need something that is some kind of handheld only hard wearing sub 150 unit if possible?

You're talking to a man who has even less retail based control than I do, and I used to own multiple Gizmondos.

Pffft. That was 2018 Mart. Bar Mortal Kombat 11, I haven't bought a single game/console this year.
