60fpsing the sh*t out of old games

Clearly Microsoft (and to a lesser extent Sony) have the bit between their teeth and are revisiting their BC libraries once again to start re-issuing older games with framerate, rather than resolution, revisits. Which you could see refreshing plenty of old 360 titles that ran shonkily even if they had passable visuals. Perhaps this is the law of diminishing graphical returns, but it seems like framerate has become more of a thing this gen than it has before in console land. Possibly a bleed of the Digital Foundry/PC expectations into the space, but also connected perhaps to the rise in competitive games in the shooter/BR genre that demand greater fluidity of interaction (and may only have their feel to distinguish themselves from the competition)? Who knows, but it's a good thing as any PC gamer will tell you…. Valorant feels as good as it does purely because of the frame rate. Same for Warzone.

I've also been dabbling with this as I've finally tried CEMU as I really fancied a game of Mario Kart 8, but it had vanished on my Switch and I couldn't be arsed wiring up the WiiU. It really took very little tinkering to be playing it, in a window, upscaled at a rock solid 60fps (which it did already tbf) and it looked amazingly impressive. So, I decided to try Breath of the Wild and mod the shit out of it. And that too is a bit of a revelation. Increased draw distance, new textures, converting it to an Xbox button layout (with A where it should be) and a solid framerate. Which you can play in a window on your desktop while watching Netflix or something. Also does wonders for Xenoblade X. In all cases though the feel of the games, smoothed to a VSynced 60fps with no hitches or technical issues was as important as the upscaling and anti-aliasing/filtering.

Any titles that spring to mind on the PS3 or 360 as shonkfests that would really benefit from this? And how much do you think the general gaming public cares. Will console gamers ever really give a shit about going above 30fps?

I think enthusiasts will care, and as they're the ones likely to be wanting to revisit shonky FPS games from a decade ago, it's probably going to find a market. Not sure many people will be going down the emulator route (fair play to you for making it work) but the current Microsoft approach of making backwards-compatible games just work, but better, seems like a win-win situation for everyone - whether that's faster loading, or auto HDR, improved resolution or a better frame rate. We all like old stuff, improved.

I'm already seeing some benefits even without the specific improvements MS are now rolling out. Monster Hunter World hits 60fps now on Series X and it's glorious. XCOM with HDR and without the 360's texture pop-in is great.

In terms of what needs attention - a lot of the big hitters of the 360 gen have already been remastered (your Ass Creeds, your BioShocks, your Dark Souls, your Mass Effects) - so I think the real win will be taking Xbox One games from 30 to 60. I'd love to see Arkham Knight or Ass Creed Origins at 60fps, or some of the games like the Tomb Raiders or Witcher 3 getting proper 4K/60 rather than the shaky compromises they shipped with. I'd say Fallout 4 and Skyrim are dead certs for this kind of treatment. Bloodborne needs it really badly.

EDF 2017 already runs at a flat 60 on the Xbox One. Not sure about the others, I don't think Blur and Enslaved are even back-compat yet.

First games which came to mind. I don't even know if I can see the difference between a 30fps and a 60fps game unless it's a mouse look FPS.

Blur will never be on the BC list. That would require Activision's permission, and they don't even act like the game ever existed.

Download CEMU.
Download the games from… a place you can quite easily google.
Then unzip them into a directory you point CEMU to
Then CEMU can automatically download any mods which you can easily set in a tick menu.

It's really easy. About 20 minutes effort.

Yeah, everything wants a key though. Some of the stuff, the keys don't work. After posting though, I discovered something called USB Helper, and everything can be organised through there.
