After talking about running PS2 on phones and handhelds I was thinking about what games I'd like to revisit. Surprisingly, despite the fact that the PS2 was absolutely one of my favourite consoles, there aren't many games I feel the need to go back to.

Primarily that's because the best games on the console have mostly been re-released and upgraded meaning that the PS2 versions are no longer the definitive version. Also many of those remasters are fairly easily playable on recent consoles. Ico, SotC, Rez, Okami, Persona 3, Katamari…

There are a ton of RPGs on the platform which I haven't played. I could finally get around to playing Persona 3 FES or any of the other MegaTen games.

Any suggestions for forgotten PS2 classics worth revisiting?

Like you said, it's hard picking one that hasn't been remade or remastered. Something that I can't see being brought back is I Ninja. This was my first game I got a 100% completion on. It's kiddie, but a nice fun title.

Ape Escape 2 and 3, I miss these games SO hard and I know @BeanyFGC does too
Dragon Quest VIII
Shadow Hearts for ring based RPG combat that I haven't played but is apparently cool
Mercenaries for 'Can I get uhhhhhhhhhhh one carpet bombing please?'
Ominusha Warlords 1 was remastered but to my knowledge the superior Ominusha 2 and 3 were not

Oh and I don't give a FUCK I am going to shill for Way of the Samurai 2, it's basically a 'choose your own adventure' book set in a town made of a few districts, you can start off and go straight to the magistrates and become a cop, you can become a gang member, you can kill both gangs on sight and just hunt rare swords from dangerous opponents at night, you can befriend a mute girl who feeds you rice balls and oppose the shogunate. Combat is usually done in one blow and the loser spurts blood into the air like an old Japanese samurai movie and you can can pick his weapon up by kicking it into the air.

I might do a storytime thread for it on Twitter, it looks poor but it's fun when you 'get it' I have not played any other WOTS game.

Also, you might not like these games but God Hand is one of the most fun action games ever made'

And Shinobi, which is the same 'Shinobi' as the Sega series on Mega Drive, very hardb ut arcadey fun set around chaining kills.

Gregory Horror Show is an excellent shout, that game is completely mental.

Silent Hill 2 is an all-time classic that was completely butchered in its remaster, the original version is the way to play it.

I always liked TimeSplitters. I think the original was PS2 exclusive and it was always my favourite one.

There's also a PS2 special edition of Silent Hill 2 with a whole extra bit where you play as Maria. I loved Silent Hill 3 too.

I'd honestly be surprised if Timesplitters still holds up.

I’ve played TimeSplitters 2 via Xbox backwards compatibility and it absolutely does, though the controls are a bit twitchy by modern standards.
