I've been playing around with this a little lately.
Anyone here played it? It's a strange one because it kind of feels a bit pointless, like they needed a new Civilization game but didn't really know what to do with it. Previous games in the series have always moved things on, they've always been an improvement on earlier versions and ironed out niggling problems - Civ 3 introduced territories, Civ 4 added personality to the leaders, Civ 5 introduced hexes and city states - but Civ 6 just feels like a rehash of the last one with a new and unpleasant graphical style. I'm still in the early game but it feels like I'm going through the motions a bit.
What am I missing? Does it hugely improve as it goes on or is this just more of the same?
I like the art style, but I'm not very good at it, and haven't put in a great deal of time. I like some of the systems, but the presentation is… off.
I won my first game without even realizing that I was anywhere near victory; it seems to hide some key information from you a bit.
This one's more about district and city management. Not really a fan, to be honest.
Has anyone tried it on the Switch?
Apparently it’s very good (though no expansions as yet).
Put a bit more time into this now and it's growing on me in a big way. I've added in the Rise and Fall expansion (Civ games always get better with an expansion under their belt) and that's introduced a lot of genuinely new stuff that makes the whole thing feel a lot less familiar. I like the new districts system a lot, every city feels genuinely distinct now, and it all feels a bit less small-scale than Civ 5. Still got a long way to go but it's definitely a good Civ game.
I'm still super-bad at it; every so often, I'll start out aiming for a conquest victory, then the AI will run past with archers while I'm still researching slings.
I'm also bad at the war :(
Big update to the PC version today. One of the new features added is "Play By Cloud", essentially asynchronous play.
Does this mean it's time to start another meandering years-long Society game of Civilization?
I'll happily join, keep to myself for 90% of the game as I pursue culture, only to look up and find myself surrounded by warmongering lunatics.
😝😭
