Bin
cue the community splitting in two, on one side those of us refusing to ignore the hatred and bullying and promotion-through-controversy, the other side trying to convince everyone that they just want everyone to game and we shouldn't bring politics into it and look, the Lefties are only faking outrage so that they can control your fun!

I've played Zweihander and LotFP. They're real fucking bad.

Play
The haul from Christmas Steam Sales. That's stuff like Yakuza 0, Shadow of War, Torment: Tides of Numenera.

Also, upcoming hit game Axiom Soccer, which I'm working on oh boy come and play it's like rocket league mixed with a third person shooter.

Want
More free time to do stuff. Like, I want to actually write some stuff for pleasure but I just keep getting sidetracked. The worst thing I can think of right now is that the writing machine is also the everything else machine.

To continue the ongoing war on weight. Hrrgghn Christmas is bad.

Bin
Not a lot at the moment. Winter being so flippin' cold?

Oh! Squarecells. It's the game that came out before Hexcells. THought it would be good, turns out it's math puzzles and a bit bum.

Zweihander did look like a bit of a mess, and Lamentations is not the system is designers think it is.

The exciting thing about OSR games was never the rules though, it's the settings and adventures that one or two designers have poured their heart into. Look up Yoon Suin, Slumbering Ursine Dunes, Gathox Vertical Slum or Dungeon Full of Monsters.

There are some OSR games which take the opportunity to present their own take on the classic rules while also giving us their own setting. Beyond The Wall is Basic D&D but the adventures are all human teen-agers trying to defend their village in the wilderness from everything outside. Into The Odd gives an endless city to simultaneously live in and explore for treasure. Shadow of the Demon Lord and The Nightmares Underneath both give two very different takes on the eternal struggle between Order and Chaos.

There's been some really exciting stuff made in the last five years, I hope there's more to come.

SotDL is a weird shout as OSR because non-casters as allowed to do interesting things :P

Honestly, though, I'm not especially interested in the OSR as a thing. The stuff I have tried has been pap and pretty much everything I know about the community makes it look like it's full of transphobes, Jordan Peterson fanatics and other assorted detritus.

Do quite like Godbound, though, that's neat. Plus the PDF is one of the few PDF's I've seen that actually take into account the fact that they're a digital format. It allows you to do incredible things like 'turn off interior art' and 'go to a text only view' so you can print it easily. Staggering.

It does look like it's full of transphobes, but honestly the G+ OSR community has more openly trans members than it does transphobes. There's a handful of people (like, literally four, out of hundreds) who make the whole place look bad and someone trying to do something about them is what triggered the whole thing that I was talking about at the top of the thread.

It's just such a shame that so much great indie content is being dismissed because of four arseholes.

Play: Hollow Knight. The other day when #1 daughter unexpectedly fell asleep in the middle of the day I panicked about all the possible things I could do/achieve and then settled into playing Hollow Knight.
It was a perfect hour and a bit with the game and two cups of tea. Made it to and defeated the first boss and have played a few additional hours since then. Currently roaming around Green Path and having a great time with the game. Have had a couple of sticking points so far but the solution/strategy has always felt pretty clear so the repetition hasn't ground the fun out of the game.

I’ve been blasting through Mario Rabbids, pulled in by how easy the first couple of levels in world 1 are, I finished that world with a couple of less than perfect levels, so replayed them and then found the challenges!
I’m near the end of World 2 and have died for the first time and wow - I just want to play one more time.

I haven’t yet set up the switch as a TV console, sonhave drained the battery a number of times playing this.

Between this and Octopath Traveller - I’ve had no reason to even turn on the PS4 this Christmas.

Want: better battery life for the Switch. I feel nervous going out without a charger.

Bin: 2018, I’ve come to a number of realisations this Year and need to make a lot of changes in my life. Come on 2019.
