So, those GTA leaks, then. The PR for GTA games has been a well-oiled machine for the last few installments, and this has put a hell of a wrench in it, with thoughtless gamers Twitter-wide bemoaning how terrible it looks, in years-old footage of pre-alpha builds while it's still at least two years away from being finished.
(Personally, I thought it looked pretty decent, from the one clip I saw; though to be fair the last in-development game I got a close look at was APB.)
I don't envy Rockstar employees at the moment. As if the production schedule and work environment there wasn't harsh enough already, now there's almost certainly going to be a ludicrous number of questionably-useful security measures to contend with.
Well I guess the same thing happened with Half-Life 2 and it never did that game any harm in the long run.
I did enjoy the idiot on Twitter yesterday claiming that graphics were the first and most important part of game development and the last couple of years would be just fine-tuning the combat - he got deservedly ripped to shreds by pretty much everyone.
I have not even looked at it, I mentioned it to loads of the kids where I work as they all love GTA Online, and only one of them was even aware of the footage.
I think this is another of those examples where the tiny majority of twitter gamers are making it out to be a big story, and it's missed by the wider gaming community as something they care about.
Unless I'm being baited wasn't it some teenager in London who has been caught now? Apparently he was willing to 'negotiate' with Rockstar for the source code? Sounds like a bit of an idiot, he's fucked himself over for what?
That awful mix of being incredibly smart in a way adults will pay enormous bags of money for and being a teenager unable to see more than five minutes into the future. Kid could have made astonishing bank if he'd gone into infosec but now he's absolutely fucked.
Seemingly, it's the same kid who hacked Microsoft and Samsung back in March? At which point, he was charged, put on parole and his dad promised to try and keep him away from computers. Sigh.
