A budget bright yellow handheld with a d-pad, two buttons and an analogue crank on the side. The only way to get games for it is to subscribe a and get a new game each week for twelve weeks.
I want this to be great.
I really don't think it's going to be.
I'm intrigued, but I don't know if I can realistically justify $150 on a curiosity.
You can side load homebrew games onto it so the subscription model isn't the only way you can put games on it.
Still rather expensive though
As I was saying to Brian on the Twits, it's partially designed by Teenage Engineering, a boutique synth company who produce the OP-1 and OP-Z (and Pocket Operators). They are eye wateringly expensive (I have an OP-1 and it's worth as much as a small car now) and deliberately arty and irritating. But like all their stuff, I want it.
Oh fuck it really is going to go the way of the Gizmondo.
That OP1 is gorgeous. Bit of a step up from my Casio PT20.
It's amazing. I always wanted one and finally scored one for a decent price off rllmuk. TE then discontinued it, sending the prices skyrocketing. Then they brought it back at something ridiculous, meaning it's probably the most money I've made off an investment ever in my entire life over a year.
The thing about it is that it's gorgeous but limited. And the limitations drive your creativity. It's a joy to use. Lasts hours and hours on battery. And is probably my favourite object ever. I do have an MPC Live which I actually use for more technical, portable sequencing, but there's something uniquely tactile and enticing about the OP-1 which means I use it a lot more.
This has a similar vibe. It's just…. desirable I guess.
So there, cavalcade is giving this one a strong NO MEH.
Then they brought it back at something ridiculous, meaning it's probably the most money I've made off an investment ever in my entire life over a year.
But did it make more than Mart's GAME shares?
Not possible. I'm still lighting my Cuban cigars with lit £50 notes to this day.
