I've said many times before that I love Teenage Engineering music gear. It's expensive. Limited. Quirky. Annoying (just like me). But just so desirable (also just like me). I think my OP-1 is the best device I own. I want an OP-1 field, but the £1800 price tag is putting me off a little….

Anyway, we all know the Playdate. The TE designed, small yellow box with a non-backlit black and white screen and a CRANK. I finally got one off someone on rllmuk and it's a wonderful little device.

I cannot stress enough how fucking gorgeous the little yellow fucker is. And the games so far have been brilliant. They release a season as a couple of games a week, which is fun (the surfing game is good) and I've also bought a few games off the store, which have all been creative, unique, interesting and engaging. There's a word battling one I've become slightly addicted to called Rendsword. Scrabble Balatro.

One thing it reminds me slightly of (and this is a cliché) is the joy of just having little play experiences. I don't really ever play mobile games any more, and this reminded me of how fun those little gap filling games could be. I dug out an old DSI recently and felt a similar thing.

The downsides are, my eyes ain't getting any younger and I might need to play it with reading glasses on. And the lack of backlight isn't a huge issue, but does make it occasionally awkward.

It's very cool though. Recommend.

Have you got Mars After Midnight? That's the Lucas Pope game for the system. I don't have £200 to spend on a system like this, but it pains me to miss out on a Lucas Pope game. Return of the Obra Dinn is in my top ten of all time.

I imagine the appeal of the device is, to an extent, similar to something like UFO-50. The joy of discovering something simple and fun that you didn't know about. I have had similar experiences going through the libraries of handheld emulation devices. Mart mentioned Neo Geo games yesterday and that prompted me to dive back into that library, a library I was completely unfamiliar with until about a year ago, and I actually found two fun little games. I maintain that the library as a whole is complete crap, though.

I'll download it. I did know it was one of the must play titles…

But it's not like I'll be seeing you any time soon for you to experience it felt.

I saw one of these in the flesh and it's definitely a nifty device, but if I got it I think it'd be as a gift for my nephews

What a strange coincidence!

Apparently guns don't kill people, rappers do. And you should hear what they said about your mother.

What was more alarming was feltmonkey's phone did a pre-flash so bright I felt like I was in Rainbow Six Siege.

I didn't know how to turn the flash off (it said it was off) and at that point it felt like we were disrupting the gig.

I don't own any teenage engineering devices but watch a lot of videos on them. I am constantly toying with getting one of the pocket operators and making soundboards to play during my classes for quizzes etc.
