OK, I've picked up a Pokemon LE Switch for the kids for Xmas. But I was going to get another one for my own flat.
The question I have is about must haves on the platform.
So far, I'm thinking Odyssey, Breath of the Wild, the Xcom ripoff, Civ 6 and…. well. This is where you come in. If you had to build a compact Switch library what would be on your list?
What's with the two Xenosaga games? What's the pricing like on the store for indie titles (e.g. Dead Cells). Octopath? Is Mario Kart 8 Deluxe worth it over the Wii-U version?
Also, in terms of screen protectors - they're essential, yes, because of the dock? For storage, it's just standard SD cards? I assume there's no, or little onboard storage?
In terms of accounts and saves etc, with the new paid service, how does that all work. Can you easily transfer saves between accounts and machines, or is it all locked down? Can you have one user account with downloaded titles available on both Switches?
You'll end up buying every indie game on Switch, they just seem to make the most sense in handheld mode.
There's enough internal storage to keep you going for a while, I have a fair few games on mine.
And yes, screen protectors are a must; apparently the plastic screen scratches easily. I have these and would recommend them: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Screen-Protector-Nintendo-Switch-Tempered-2x-TRANSPARENT-Glass-Protectors/dp/B01N9RG3XS/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1543856134&sr=8-3&keywords=switch+screen+protector
Octopath?
For my money, Octopath isn't really worth the price of entry. It's got an interesting graphical style hobbled by its drab colour palette, the characters are kind of dull, and the story isn't as dramatic as I want from my JRPGs - all the problems you're solving are quite small-scale. The (menu-driven, turn-based) battle system is pretty solid, but that's not enough to carry it.
Is Mario Kart 8 Deluxe worth it over the Wii-U version?
I didn't have the WiiU version, but it's fine. It's Mario Kart. I don't feel like it's massively different from (how I remember) previous Mario Karts, even though I've not played one since Double Dash on the Gamecube. The AI are still bastards.

I haven't needed one, but mine stays in the dock 95% of the time.

There's 32GB of storage on the machine itself, and it takes standard microSD cards. It's not easy to move stuff between the on-board and removable media, though.
If by "XCom ripoff" you mean Mario & Rabbids, then definitely, put that on your list. Smash Bros if that's your thing. Splatoon 2. Any quality indies you haven't already bought on other platforms: Celeste, Hollow Knight, Yoku, Stardew Valley have been my picks but you'll probably have your own list. I don't think MK8 is worth it if you already have the Wii U version, all you get is one new character (plus the DLC included if you don't already have that).
With the accounts and saves, if you're subscribed to the online service there's now cloud saves for most games (Splatoon and Pokemon are excluded for some reason known only to Nintendo) so it should be easy to transfer saves between the same account on different machines. There's a family subscription for the online service which supports up to 8 users so that might be best if you're stumping up for the kids as well.
Onboard storage is 32GB which will keep you going for a while, longer if you buy games on cart of course. Switch games are typically far smaller than PS4/Xbone titles though the size is creeping up.
Factor a Pro Controller into your budget if you can.
I wouldn't bother with Mario Kart if you have MK WiiU. Splatoon 2 is the other game witch gets brought up in these chats, presumably you already know if you want it though.
I still haven't played much on mine. Mario Odyssey is fantastic, Zelda is incredible. I'm looking forward to buying Towerfall and Mario Vs Rabbids.
All useful….ta
Zelda is great on the WiiU but it really suffers from a lack of instant switch off and restart.
Splatoon I'm not so sure on. I think I played it on WiiU and wasn't that enamored with it. Kids might dig it though.
With the two Xenoblade (not saga, sorry) games - I assume one is a compact story and one is the sprawling epic (though they are both standalone?). I heard it was somewhat…. letchy in a slightly uncomfortable way - but the first was great so not sure if either is worth getting. If not either of those or Octapath, am I missing any other JRPGs? Did I hear Tales of Vesperia was being ported?
I wasn't that fussed on the pro controller as I can't see it being used docked that often. But maybe worth considering.
So, with the family account… can that share software? Would I be best "doing a mart" and creating one account and sharing digital software across both machines?

No, it's purely a way to buy up to 8 online licenses in one go. It doesn't have any other advantages.
In terms of creating a single account, I haven't actually tried it but you might be prevented from both using it at the same time. As always with Nintendo's online services, assume they've picked the stupidest and most outdated system and you won't be far wrong.
My first purchase was Dark Souls - and I’m watching a few eBay cart only sales of Octopath.
I quite fancy MARIO Kart and I’m waiting for Fire Emblem next year.
I also bought R-Type - it’s one of my all time cabinet favourite games, not sure the port is that much fun.
There are quite a few Switch-only (or Switch-and-PC) indie games that are supposed to be good. Golf Story and Battle Chef Brigade are supposedly excellent. I've had my eye on Ambition of the Slimes which is very cheap and supposedly great if you like SRPG/puzzle games. Into the Breach is by the FTL guys. There are loads and loads more.
I wanted to do a mart :(
Let's face it, who doesn't?
Golf Story is fun. Bomb Chicken is fun. Battle Chef Brigade is lovely. Voez is ace, if you like rhythm action games. Would need to check my Switch to see what else I have that I can vouch for, but there's a tonne of great indie titles that, as has been already said, are perfect for handheld mode.
Is Minecraft: Bedrock Edition available on the e-store?
I caved and bought Octopath today. The eBay Of The cart only we’re going up to £38 and with postage brought it close to retail price!
So, in the end I've gone for a grey one with…
Odyssey
Kart
Zelda
Xenoblade 2
There's already Pokemon Let's Go. So I'll add Starlink, Smash for the kiddos and Civ 6 for me (though it's not in stock anywhere…. )
And that should do….
I have enough martcredit at a local store for either ARMs, or Octopath (with a bit of cash). Heard mixed things about ARMs. Anyone played it?
There's a demo. It looked fun but very lightweight, though people seem to like it.
ARMS is good, but it's not my bag. There's no single-player content of note to speak of, it's all multiplayer and online. I'd give it a miss unless you're absolutely certain.
It's Wii Boxing Plus. I thought it was fun, briefly, but kind of shallow.
I don't like Skyrim. I've played it on about 75 platforms and always hated it. Why have I just bought Skyrim?
Octopath has a three hour demo. Just long enough to go through two opening stories of the heroes.
An hour in and it had convinced me.
No one mentioned Katamari! I am very much looking forward to playing that again.
It's only £15 too! I bought it this morning. What a lovely game.
OK. The Switch is fucking amazing. How come none of you bastards told me about it? Brian. I mainly blame you.
Mario amazing. Skyrim in my crotch amazing. Zelda amazing. Octopath amazing.
I can only apologise for only writing switch praise you choose to ignore. I shall try harder.
So Octopath Traveller looks awesome, not sure how I missed that one.
Is The World Ends With You something to buy? I seem to remember the DS game getting all the cool kids (Alastaor) excited.
I’m also tempted by Disgea 1 and 5, but know that I’ve no time to sink into either of them.
Disgaea 5 is brilliant, yes it's absolutely massive but it's also something you can pick up and play for 20 minutes at a time. Definitely the better of the two.
It's not on Switch is it…? Is it?
:O
Disgaea 1 and 5 are both on Switch, yes.
Does anyone here have a family account I could buy into (if they don't expect to expand their family)?
Yes. PM me the email address you used to sign up for your Nintendo account.
If I paid half the yearly rate, could I take a slot and get an additional 3 kid accounts? Or would you need the extra slots?
You get 8 slots with a family account and I’m already using 5 of them - I’m saving an additional one for Mart so you’re welcome to the remaining two but I’m afraid I can’t offer you any more than that.
It's cool. It's not too expensive is it? 30 a year or so? I'll take one out. Thanks for offering me your slots though :D
I’m saving an additional one for Mart
Ah, yes, I need to get on this. The ex is playing Pokémon on the boy's Switch, so I just need to keep reminding her to link her NNID. Then I can make her the responsible parent, remove myself and we'll be sorted.
I bought Civ 6 because why the fuck not.
I don't get it. Anyone here played it and can answer a few questions?
I’ve played a little bit of it and a lot of the previous games in the series. Depends whether your questions are Civ 6 specific or more general Civilization questions I guess.
Yeah, Civ 6. I'm not sure I understand what the builders are for. I can't appear to do anything with them to improve a tile unless I have the tech needed to basically pillage the tile for resources. Apart from that they don't appear to do anything…. And districts are weird. Not sure I fully get that either….
I worked it out.
I have bought many things for the Switch.
I think I have a problem.
Welcome to the last 18 months of my life.

"Oh look, you can buy X game for Switch! Although… it has been out on PS4 for 3 years. And will be a lot cheaper on PS4. And run a lot better on PS4…."
tap buy
I know. I was looking at Bastion and Dust going…. "well, I own them on 14 different platforms… but this way I can play them in bed…." [taps buy]
Can I recommend this?
Because there's playing Switch in bed, and then there's playing Switch in bed. :D
(Please note, this is not a photo of my bedroom, I just searched for 'play switch in bed bracket' on Google. But I have one of these to do exactly this and it's awesome. Lie down, arms by your sides holding the Joy-Con, playing Switch without having to sit or keep your hands in a 'holding the controller' position… it works soooooo well)
I see Mart is planning to spend his retirement not moving at all. Mini-fridge at arm's length just out of shot, presumably.
Gar - I think I might be back on the joining your family bus.
Can I PM you my e-mail, and then a second on or around Xmas?
And then… 2/8ths of the yearly sub via Paypal.
Dead Cells is amazing BTW.
As is Cat Quest.
Cat Quest is great! Loved that, even if it gets a little grindy towards the end.
And I don't need a mini-fridge when I've got one of those hats that you can put bottles of drink with straws into.

Yes, that’s fine, if you’re joining the family though you’ll have to come round for Christmas. You can be in charge of gravy.
