Mr Party Hat

Getting there bright and early this month, after a few lapses.

Play
Mario 3D All-Stars. I don't get the negative reactions Mario 64 has been getting. They seem to fall into two camps: reddit complaining it's aged badly and is a silly game for silly boomers; and others moaning about the lack of overhaul.

The first complaint is clearly nonsense - even ignoring its historical importance it still feels great to play, which is utterly astonishing when you consider it was one of The First. And I disagree with the second point too. Fine, remake Crash - they were hardly masterpieces to begin with. But overhauling Mario 64 feels like sacrilege to me.

Mario Sunshine is still a bit shit. Mario Galaxy is still the best platformer ever made (bundling the sequel into that).

Animal Crossing. I think Autumn starts today! Pumpkin time.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps. I'm lost.

Want
Next gen to arrive. Come on. Hurry up now.

Gravity Rush 2 - nearly given up on this twice now (to the point of deleting it from the HDD), but have decided to play it to the bitter end. It's just so looong (partially my own fault, as I've gone a little completionist on it, but I've got 60% story completion at 25 hours…), and the joy of the traversal and exploring is tempered by the way that the side missions/challenges frequently ask the game to write cheques it really can't cash. It's definitely (just about) a good game, but yeah, if you didn't love the first and/or have a real hankering for this, it's hard to recommend.

Hades - love it. Starting to get the hang of it, a bit (though being away for a few days and forgetting what half of the icons are didn't help), and the only thing I could say against it so far is that I think it would be noticeably worse in handheld mode, but i haven't actually checked that.

Demon's Tilt - just a quick play here and there, still. The Society's resident pinball wizards should play this (and add me if/when they do). It's probably a bit expensive for a game with only one table (obligatory 'but what a table!'), but I think it's great.

Super Mario Odyssey - a lovely game, but unfortunately I have no joy in my heart/there's some overlap with GR2, so I've just been doing a world a week (or so) since an early flurry of activity. At some point I will actually remember to play it (properly) again.

Golf Story - a funny, smart little game, hampered only by the odd QoL issue. I suspect it's actually my most played game on the Switch thus far.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - I started this aeons ago on the DS, but never finished it. I bought the trilogy on 3DS, and never got around to it until now. Done the first two cases, and remember all of what I loved (and mildly irritated me) about it the first time around. Hopefully I'll actually stick it out this time.

Luigi's Mansion - started it a few weeks ago, decided it wasn't the appropriate time of year yet, and put it on the back burner. I expect to start playing it again any minute now (as work is boring anyway).

I'm about a third to halfway through 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, and maybe a quarter of the way to understanding what's going on. I'm quite enjoying it, though - the story sections occasionally still feel a bit trial-and-error, though I'm getting the hang of what it's expecting now… I think.

Mouth Dreams, the new Neil Cicierega album, is out and it's… deeply weird and hilarious. If you're at all interested in surreal, non-sequitur song mashups, check it out.

Want

I need to stop watching Series X preview videos – they're only out of embargo for limited back-compatibility coverage yet, but I'm still feeling the hype. I think this is the first console I'll have bought at launch since the Dreamcast.

Switch: I haven’t played any Animal Crossing for a couple months but I’m keen to jump back in for Pumpkin month. Anyone else still playing or interested in getting back in for a bit? If there’s a few of us we could show off where our islands ended up and maybe do some more turnip capitalism.

I also want to get back to Okami before I forget what I was doing and fail to finish it again… It’s not like I wasn’t enjoying it, I’ve just not been playing games.

RPGs: We are about halfway through Tomb of Annihilation in my 5e game, and after being quite down on it for a bit, the last couple sessions have been really good. Roll20’s dynamic lighting makes a really big difference.

I am running Coriolis on Mondays, a sort of SF Arabian Nights. It’s good but it is a serious change in pace and I’m finding it quite hard work. The slightly obtuse skill list doesn’t hep much.

This Saturday I’ll be running Mothership for the first time. It’s basically Alien, although this adventure is more like Event Horizon mashed up with Doom.

2000AD: I just got a shiny new iPad and I’ve been using it to read the 2000AD books I got in the recent humble bundle. Brink was good in a sort of Expanse Lite kinda way. I’m currently reading the first Dredd collection, which is very silly and I’m loving it.

Want
Mario 3D Collection and that daft new Mario Game&Watch. I’m not the biggest fan of NES Mario but I do have a soft spot for Game&Watch.

More 2000AD books. Maybe actually a subscription to the weekly. Issue 2200 just came out and I stopped collecting at about 1100, so it seems right.

To run the 13th Age game which is filling my brain.

Bin
The Internal Markets bill would be a good start.

America, apparently.

The new next gen. My opinion might change if Switch releases start drying up but for now I’m good.

Still slowly working my way back through The Last of Us Part II. Picking up on some of the more subtle foreshadowing going on, but still haven't got back to the start of Day 2 yet.

Haven't played any more Genshin Impact - yet - but it's probably going to see a bit more time. It's the sort of game I've been idly looking for, where I don't feel like I have to dedicate huge amounts of time to, but can instead just potter about exploring and smacking monsters about. It reminds me a little of how I used to play WoW in that way.

Want
Squadrons - I played in the beta a couple of months ago and really liked it.

Biden to win in November. I actually tried to watch the debate, and made it about six minutes in before I had to switch it off in rage. If Trump wins again, I genuinely believe that's the end of America as we know it.

Play: Since last I posted… Going Under. A rogue-like/lite(?) about an intern working in a fizzy drink /meal replacement company who has to explore the offices of failed tech start ups on the floors below.

The main character, Jackie, enters these procedurally generated dungeons and has to descend through 3 levels before meeting the boss who is in possession of some mcguffin that will progress the story.

The gameplay mechanics are good – you can pick up pretty much anything and use it as a weapon but everything has a Breath of the Wild style durability but this can be improved by picking up apps for Jackie's phone. The apps provide all kinds of buffs and each level includes a room where she can select an additional ability. These icons stack on the side of the screen and last for the duration of the run (unlike apps which have a set number of uses) and provide additional buffs (e.g. increased invincibility after taking damage or a chance to knock down enemies when entering a room). As the story progresses members of staff in the main office give out tasks which encourage the player to complete challenges. Doing these opens more missions from the character and means they can become Jackie's mentor which provides a bonus for the player.

It builds all of these things up at a nice pace and I really like the art style and the music. It's pretty goofy looking but this was the thing that drew me to it in the first place. I recommended it to a pal who immediately thought it reminded him of Fortnite which I don't see but it's a bright, fun looking game, reminds me more of 80's clay animation. I also really like the way the game has woven a fairly entertaining narrative on top of the game play and the missions from other characters provide a bit of variety as they encourage you to play in certain ways to complete the challenge.

I probably should've waited a couple of days for Spelunky 2 but this is a really nice distraction in the wait for Spelunky 2's promised cross play.

Spiritfarer - yes, I really like this. It's a kind of mixture of Animal Crossing (talking animals, casual gardening), a crafting game (lots and lots of this) and a Metroidvania (chunks of the map are gated behind various abilities and upgrades). It's got a very very nice flow to it, where there's always something to do and things just kind of unfold naturally from your activities, and a lot of the writing is very touching. It's also surprisingly long, I've been playing it for ages and I've only shipped about half the spirits to the Everdoor. A real gem.

Yakuza 5 - which is mental even by the standards of this series. It's just colossal. I've only played through Kiryu's section, in which I spent hours and hours being a taxi driver, picking up passengers and dropping them off and getting fined for failing to use my indicators properly. Now I'm halfway through Saejima's section and it's gone full-on Monster Hunter. It's the most serious of the Yakuza games I've played (there's just so much plot to get through) and the pacing is glacial, but it's got a unique character to it that sometimes the other games in the series don't quite manage to achieve.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Justice For All which is the second game, and the only one I've never completed. First time round I got burned by the interminable circus mystery that's usually held up as the single worst case in the entire franchise - I've made it through now and the final case is all new to me. It's a fun game, not as good as the first but it definitely tries to mix things up and a lot of what it does works. The third game is where the magic is, though.

Want

The Xbox Series X which is the first console for years that folk actually seem to have built up a whole load of hype for. I'm genuinely really looking forward to getting it, even if all I'll play on it initially is another Yakuza game.

Star Wars Squadrons I think, need to check those reviews but it does look good.

Mario 64 - Getting 70 stars is amazing, getting 120 can get pretty frustrating, I just don't like the 'get 100 coins' each world has, fuck knows how I'm gonna' do that on fucking Tick Tock world. I got super mad at Rainbow Ride earlier but when you don't need to ride the fucking carpets it's actually pretty great.

Genshin Impact - best F2P game since Warframe? It's blowing up right now and rightly so. Let's hope they don't let it go to their head in future updates.

I downloaded Ys Origins and Ys 8 on Vita, the former is actually cross buy but not cross save but that's still cool imo. This is Falcom's other big RPG series as I understand it. Whereas Trails is turn based and like a strategy RPG. this is real time, faster…and holy shit for an old ass game it feels so damn smooth and nice to play. If you want a dungeon crawler that isn't slow burn I guess try it.

It's fine. Not as good as I was expecting. GFX are passable. It's vaguely reminiscent of XWing, which is good. The multiplayer is like pretty much any other multiplayer flying game ever. I assumed with the smaller squadron sizes it might be able to feel a bit more cohesive, but sadly it's the same choice between knife fighting/turning battles or speeding away and K-turning and the missile spam is really annoying. A lot of it is strangely lofi. UI bits and bobs seem archaic at times - it feels a bit like the price tag was stapled on when they realised it wasn't going to be a title capable of commanding AAA status.

It'll be £10 in about 4 weeks with 20 people playing it. But for what it is, it's OK I guess.

It probably doesn't help that I came straight from watching Mortimer and Whitehouse Gone Fishing, which is essentially Doom Eternal, but the exact opposite.

But yes, on a technical level it's unbelievably impressive. I just hope I can stomach another ten hours of it.

If you find yourself getting stuck don't be afraid to switch on cheats. Like, you're there to have a good chainsawing kill time; it is a rock solid game too, even on the easier difficulty modes.

The first game had a trophy for finishing the first level (just the first level!) on the highest difficulty. It was nigh-on impossible. I only managed it because once you cleared the first two waves of enemies, there was a way to glitch jump around the edge of the remaining level, allowing you to reach the exit without fighting anyone else.

Yeah, this is going on Easy mode.

I went back and tried Genshin Impact again; so many people are speaking fondly of it, I assumed I'd missed something.

I can see the vague outline of a good game, if I squint. But I can't get past the performance issues on PS4 – it's constantly 20-odd FPS. I might wait and give it a go on PS5.

So, a lot of it isn't about twitch reaction time stuff. A huge amount of the combat in the game is about enemy prioritisation and managing the hordes of enemies as they charge at you. I'm gonna bet that it was the first Arachnotron in the big outdoor parking lot area that got you. Every enemy in the game has a weakspot that you can hit and it'll disable some of their functionality or make them easier to kill.

Mancubus enemies, shoot the rockets on their hands with a precision bolt from the assault rifle or a sticky grenade. Arachnotrons need to get their dumb turret on their head shot to make their shot travel way slower and be much weaker. Sticky grenades - or just your regular grenade - into the mouth of a Cacodemon when it's moving or when it's attacking will cause it to stagger into a glory kill state instantly. You've got to be constantly looking around, moving and re-prioritising targets, especially as new stuff spawns in.

One thing that'll happen as it adds more enemies to a fight, and mixes up those enemies and abilities, is you'll start to treat more enemies as like… health and ammo pick ups rather than threats. By level 5 or so you'll be looking at an imp which, right now is probably being treated as a threat, and be like 'oh, cool, that's a way to get 45 health back.' Chainsaw for ammo, glory kill for health, flame belch for armor. Take what you need, never stop moving, and push forward in every fight.

Everything about DE is a refinement and expansion of 2016; you're the boss fight that the demons are up against. Have a hunt for a Rune to stick on Chronostrike so you can slow down time while in the air - that'll give you more breathing room. Also, use the weapon wheel to slow down time and give yourself a moment to take a look around.

Ebe71aac853092062596ff1844b992fc?s=156&d=identicon

Alastor

Yeah, Chainsaw always regenerates one pip of energy now, and killing things with it gives ammo back so no reason not to kill a lot of the lowliest of demons with it really. Saving bigger amounts of Chainsaw juice for the big boys is still a thing though, but saving or not is up to you. That said I think the default un-upgraded ammo clips on each gun is still way smaller than I remember them being in 2016 (I seem to recall the machinegun feeling like it had infinite ammo in that game) so I won't feel too bad about running out.

All the cool kids are playing Mario games at the moment so I thought I'd join in.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 - I can see why this was left out of the recent remasters collection because the Yoshi levels in particular use a lot of precision pointer control. It's absolutely glorious though. I think I completed it back when it came out but I can hardly remember any of it and I definitely didn't go for the full 120 stars or anything. It also looks tremendous, still, and the Wii's low resolution hardly hurts it at all. It'll be a real shame if this is left to languish in obscurity as the one Mario game that doesn't get a proper re-release.

Mario 35 - Super Mario Brothers Battle Royale, in the style of Tetris 99. Play through the original SMB and send enemies to your opponents' games when you defeat them. It's… OK. Fun because SMB is fun, but it doesn't have anything like the urgency of Tetris 99 and most games go on for ages once you get down to the last three or four players because there's nothing much there that actually makes it more difficult for a decent Mario player. With a few tweaks it could be great, but it's free I guess and worth a quick look.

Halo Reach. I've never been a big fan of Halo games; the hoorah marine stuff is awful, and for a series with famously good gunplay the gunplay is a bit shit.

But I've always liked Reach, for some reason. Never been able to figure out why; it's not that different from 3. Replaying now on the Master Chief Collection, and it's as enjoyable as I remember.

I feel like Reach is paced better, what with not throwing you straight into EPIC GALACTIC CONFLICT, and keeping the stakes relatively small; it also has more (and generally better) characters to accompany you on missions, so it's not all Chief stomping around isolated locations on his own with the occasional objective shout from a voice in your ear.

Thanks to PS+ (long time since anyone said that round these parts), I'd finally had a chance to play Vampyr.

I'm only a couple of hours in, but so far it's mostly what I expected, though with a heavier RPG lean than full-blooded action game, with dialogue, ability, and upgrade trees all over the shop. It looks and plays kind of like a remaster of a PS3 game that never was, but the writing so far is fine, and it's plenty atmospheric, all dim lights in Thames fog. Also, it's weirdly apt for the times - it's set in 1918 during the Spanish Flu pandemic, and there are posters everywhere declaring DON'T COUGH IN PUBLIC and the like.

So I'm enjoying it, if partly as a distraction from the current absence of Squadrons from my hard drive…

Additional PLAY:

All the board games - I've always been a board game person, so this isn't really anything new. But now, living with my partner who also loves playing board games and getting into a little gaggle of folk who regularly meet up to do the same, this is now very much a regular thing. I've bought a bunch in the last few months on top of the ones I already own, with the following being highlights:

Binding of Isaac: Four Souls - I love the videogame of Isaac and the card game is a really strong approximation of it, but it's also insanely brutal in the way it pits players against one another. That means it's best with more people… with two, you're just fucking each other over repeatedly and it gets a bit unfun. Great with four or more though. Art is lovely too.

Root - A strange one, as you're playing against others but everyone has totally different goals, meaning everyone plays in parallel as well as trying to outdo each other. Played it at my friend's house and loved it so much, I immediately got the base game and all the expansions off eBay as a set. Another one with lovely artwork.

Dead Man's Draw - This one was an iOS game yonks back which I loved, so learning there was a physical version made it an instant purchase. A card game based around the risk of continually drawing cards to build up loot, but then losing it all if you draw two of the same suit. Really good fun, and quick to play a few rounds.

Luchador - A dice game based on Mexican wrestling. It's as silly as it sounds, comes with its own cardboard ring (the dice have to be thrown inside it) and requires players to actually tag each other when playing as a team. Great game.

High Society - A bidding game where you're trying to live the life of luxury without losing all your cash. Very fast, with absolutely gorgeous card art. Definitely my kind of game, because I don't need to pretend I'm a bon vivant.

Sheriff of Nottingham - A bluffing game where you have to try and sneak contraband goods (pepper, silk, crossbows) into market along with as many legal goods (cheese, bread, chickens) as possible, without getting caught by the Sheriff of Nottingham. Utterly silly because every round just devolves into loudly-discussed accusations and bribery. Hilarious.

Pirate Loot - Another one that's best with more people, because it's far too cutthroat with just two. Build up the best pirate crew and then steal all the booty… it was fun, but a bit harsh with just two of us. Since it was on sale in my local board game shop though (just €5), I didn't mind dropping another €10 for the expansion that lets you play with six people.

I also bought Betrayal at the House on the Hill today - not opened it yet, but I've played it before so I know it's great.

Between these, my stupid collection of robots and a tiny flat, I have no room for anything any more.

The character designs are uniformly exhausting (whoever designed them has far too obvious a zettai ryouiki (NSFW) fetish). None of them is wearing adequate footwear for the kind of bouldering you do around the place. The wings-as-gliders are just vaguely embarrassing.

It's got a more annoying tutorial/companion character than Navi from Ocarina of Time. There are frankly too many menus. I don't know why I'm supposed to care about anyone or anything I've encountered. I ended up in a Trial of some sort with two characters I didn't recognise, and when I finished its objective it just restarted (with no progress bar this time) and killed me. Cooking is just picking from a menu, which is less satisfying than Zelda's approach.

Combat is vaguely satisfying but so far pretty simplistic; there's a promise of elemental strategy and effects that seems like it'll never live up to the idea because they can't guarantee you'll actually have the necessary characters due to the gacha approach to collecting party members.

I don't get it.

WTF Paimon is the cutest thing ever!!!! >_<

I honestly can't think of the last time a mascot character had so much…well, character and wasn't just a mascot. Like, everyone in the game talks to her and stuff like she's a part of the game as opposed to just this little pixie only you can see (see the scene where Amber promises her a a 'Sticky Honey Roast'). And as far as talking goes I find the banter really well written (and well voice acted) and at times pretty funny. (especially the straight up savagery between the MC and her)

That's why I care about the characters too I guess, I wasn't expecting a gacha to have such decent voice acting and writing but I think it does. I know the plot is anime shit and they're all straight out of a seasonal isekai or whatever, but the dialogue is full of stuff like that Paimon pic and even if it doesn't land humour-wise we can at least respect the attempt surely?

Well, you are definitely guaranteed one Fire (Amber), Water (Barbara…I think?) wind/rock (Traveller and the Guaranteed Noelle if you roll the discount banner), Ice (Kaeya), Electric (Lisa) but I won't deny that it feels pretty bad to be using those when people online run around with people like Diluc and Razor who may as well be gods in comparison, which is what I meant by gacha envy earlier on.

I don't know who any of those characters are, so it's hard to feel jealous.

I've played a few hours more than aniki, but I deleted it this morning; it's very pretty, and the writing & performances are better than they have any right to be, but when it comes down to it, I just can't make myself care.

Bin: Mario 64 - I could and would have beaten this ages go, as I have 110+ Stars. I wanted to get all 120 before finishing but this is actually really unfun IMO. Some of the Stars really suck to get and you need to get 100 coins on every level for a Star each and while I had no issue getting some Stars on some levels having to slowly rinse out Hazy Cave isn't exactly what I call a fun time. I hadn't even got to getting all coins on Tick Tock Fucking Clock either, so I think I threw in the towel way before any serious brain damage was done actually.

So…I pressed on, and wow Bowser's final level was fun, this is a fun game! A very clever at times, and satisfying fun game to play. Sure some mis steps but the the game only forces you to get 70 stars so hey.

Super Mario Sunshine next :eyes:. :Personally really interested in seeing where this sits between the 'Pure Platformer' feel of Mario 64 and the 'this-was-made-by-a-guy-high-as-a-kite' (WE WONT ASK YOU TO MAKE A HARD JUMP BUT PLEASE PUT THIS HAT ON A T-REX!!!!) stuff from later games, like Odyssey. Curious to see how close it is to either camp, although obviously the guy who made stuff like Rainbow Ride in M64 must have very trippy dreams or something too.

Additional Play.

Destiny 2 has got such a direction problem. Seeing as the full game (plus expansions) is now on Game Pass I thought I'd dive back in.

I knew that Forsaken was the first major expansion I hadn't played, so my plan was to start there. Except… I couldn't find it. Still can't. I've even googled it, and I still can't work out how to launch the first quest.

After about 30 minutes of running around, navigating the menus, and googling step-by-step instructions, I'm still not 100 percent sure whether Forsaken is even still accessible.

How have Bungie fluffed something so fundemental? If someone wanted to, say, play through World of Warcraft's 3rd expansion, it wouldn't be difficult to find.

(All of this has to be caveated with, I'm now an old fogie and don't understand 'live service' games at the best of times.)

Do not play Destiny at the moment wait for Beyond Light to drop. they're reworking the entire new or returning player experience. It is a fucking confusing mess at the moment.
